Brevard
County Info & Map
Just 35 miles from Orlando and nestled between the Atlantic
Ocean and the St. Johns River, Brevard County on Florida’s
Space Coast is bursting out of its ‘sleepy town’ phase
and developing into a major economic force in Central Florida.
Driven by our plentiful jobs, fabulous climate and wealth
of natural resources, Brevard County’s growth continues
to churn as more and more businesses and people see what
we have to offer.
Economy
Much of our local economy is driven by the Kennedy Space
Center programs and the high-tech jobs provided by giants
such as Harris, Northrup Grumman, Boeing, the United Space
Alliance and DRS, to highlight the larger employers.. In
fact, our current population is approaching 500,000, and
is expected to soar to 620,000 by 2015 as NASA replaces its
shuttle program with a modern version, which will create
even more jobs and attract high-tech students to our various
universities and colleges.
In addition to our growing technology sector, Port Canaveral
is now America’s #1 passenger port (with cruise ships
now numbering) and the world’s only gateway servicing
land, sea, air and space.
The population explosion resulted from relatively modest
property values, low property taxes, and our lack of state
income tax. Now, the housing sector is is adding to job growth.
In fact, the Milken Institute’s Best Performing Cities
Index, a measurement of where jobs are being created, put
the Melbourne/Titusville/Palm Bay MSA as the #1 producer
of jobs for 2005!
Demographics
Approaching 500,000 in 2006, the 35 to 54 age group takes
up the largest chunk of the population, 29 percent. We added
over 12,000 to our population in 2005! Please visit the Space
Coast Economic Development Commission for complete demographic
and economic information.
Education
Brevard County prides itself as having one of the best public
school programs in the state, with most schools having A
and B grades. There are many private and charter schools
throughout the county.
Brevard Community College, with campuses in the central,
north and south areas of the county, along with the University
of Central Florida and Rollins College, provide plenty of
choices for students. Florida Technological University (Florida
Tech) is Florida’s second largest private college and
appears in Peterson’s guide as a Top College for Science.
It offers over 100 degrees in schools of Engineering, Science & Liberal
Arts (with specialties in Physics and Space Sciences), Aeronautics,
Management, and Psychology .

at Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios just 45-minute
drive on the Beach Line.
